GATE PREPARATION

My performance in gate 2012(EE):AIR 396 (99.7 percentile)
WHAT IS GATE: Seldom any person successful in any exam states that it was tough. Most of the successful guys say that do some hard work and this exam is like a cakewalk. But I say to measure the difficulty level of an exam just look at the number of aspirants or in other words the success ratio and in this manner GATE is becoming tougher year by year as it has almost become the sole exam for students aspiring for both higher studies and public sector jobs in the field of engineering. So do not start the preparation by assuming that it is easy, say it in a different manner it is achievable.
Now comes the preparation part. It is entirely different from the preparation of your semester exams. Firstly cover the entire syllabus of the concerned subject from any standard book. Practice some numerical problems from that book also. Go through this 2-3 times, so that you are thorough with the basic concepts of the subjects. Then start practicing questions from any objective book and previous year gate questions. Practice is the most important aspect of GATE preparation, so practice as much as you can. But the best source of standard objective questions for practice is previous year papers, so practice them at least 4-5 times at regular intervals. That was the basic strategy of my preparation. One more thing, if possible join any test series for gate, because it keeps a check on your preparation level and you get some valuable inputs also.
At last there is no sure shot formula for success in any examination. This was the strategy that worked for me and it can vary according to an individuals circumstances.
Alert: My personal experience is there is a lot of material available in market for GATE preparation but most of them are substandard or full of mistakes. Follow only reliable material to save your time and hard work.
Recommended material for electrical engineering students:
  • Circuit theory: Hayt and Kemmerly
  • Electrical Machines :PS Bhimbra
  • Power electronics : PS Bhimbra
  • Power system: CL Wadhwa
  • Control system:any book which covers the syllabus
  • Electrical and Electronic Measurements:AK Sawhney
  • Analog electronics:Boyelsted
  • Digital electronics:R P jain/Morrris Mano
  • GATE solved papers:Arihant or Made Easy publication
  • Objective book for GATE electrical:RK Kanodia

    1. i got 46.33 out of 100.but the paper in 2011 was tougher as compared to 2010.so it all depends on level of question paper.in 2010 around 50 marks were enough to get a rank under 500.
      any other query is welcome....
